This was a really interesting pod-cast to listen to because it deals with exposing students to other cultures and helping them become global citizens at young ages. Silvia Tolisano was the presenter and she talked about what her school is doing to help students become global citizens. They have started a program called Global studies, which studies a new country every year. The program consists of three parts: travel, connections and interdisciplinary instruction.
The first part is pretty basic! The school send two teachers to a country to gain knowledge about the country and bring back artifacts and data. The second part allows the students to connect with teachers through there school website which is made only for the global studies class. The website also has the teachers blogs and, pictures and videos that they have taken. The third part means that buy having this class and trying to understand another culture we can make parallels and make connections between different school subjects. So that what the students learn in global studies can be brought into every other subject.
You may think that this project does not let the students become involved but it does!! The third and fourth grade teachers made this program for there students that was called China Trekker. Which allowed the students to virtually Trek along with the teachers . The students would watch the teachers videos, look at pictures and listen to pod-casts. And buy doing those three things it allowed the student to record observations for specific cultural universals like transport, food and culture.
The teacher knew that China Trekker would be boring for the older students so they made and amazing race game for them . They split there class into groups and gave then challenges they they had to complete together. They would only be able to complete these challenges if they read the teachers blogs, watched there videos and did there own research. And of course after some challenges were done they had road blocks that they had to complete, like Ping-Pong Pit stop,Origami Road Block or Great Wall Challenge.this not only kept the students interest in the trip but it allowed them to become self motivated and have fun while learning.
If I have lost you then maybe you should listen to the pod-cast yourself or check out there website which is really neat www.Sjeds.com/blog/china.

Hello Katherine
Thank you for taking the time to watch the presentation. It has truly been an amazing journey with our elementary school kids who are becoming familiar with other countries and cultures. You recognized correctly that the motivation and fun is very important to the student , especially at that age, to truly internalize this kind of experience.
Our school is continuing to expand the students’ horizon. We have traveled together to Egypt in 2007 and are off to Latin America this coming school year.
