Become a Freecycler. The idea behind the international Freecycle movement is simple: members recieve for free things they need but don’t have that other members have but don’t need. This internet-based “free cycle”of goods is facilitated by local volunteers, who help turn users’ trash into treasure, keeping thousands of useful items out of landfill sites.

This is the Freecycle website http://www.freecycle.org/ it has allot of information about the movement as well as information about freecycle communities around the world. Did you know Regina has it’s own Freecycle community?

Blog Mentorship

I have been mentoring Sandi Kerney’s grade 6/7 class out of Moose Jaw. At first when I started mentoring them I really had no clue what to wright because there blogs would be so simple that you could not comment about anything that they wrote. Or I couldn’t relate to anything that they wrote. Especially with the boys because they are all huge hockey fans, and I know nothing about hockey. But after many times of sitting staring at my computer trying to figure out what to say I decided that instead of writing something fake like “The Flames look good this year”I would write them questions on why they like a certain team and what caused then to write that blog. I think that it really payed off ! This one girl had a poll about Easter and she was asking people what Easter meant to them. There were four options like church with your family, eating chocolate,no school or I have never thought about it. So I commented on the poll and I told her that I have never really thought about it and why. And then next blog she talked about the stats of the poll and she mention my answer, she didn’t say my name or anything but she mentioned my answer! When I saw that it became evident to me that writing these honest comments ,even if you know nothing about it, does pay off.

Something that really shocked me with this experience was how I have never met any of those students but I sort of know what kind of person they are through their blog. And because of this I could most of the time know what there blogs would be about even before I had read it . Just because their were a certain amount of kids who like to do allot of polls, some talked about hockey and others about school and their family.

During this whole experince I wish I would have received answers to the questions I posed on some of the students blogs. Because sometimes I felt that my commenting really wasn’t helping them at all.But even though I didn’t I would say that I have enjoyed this experience because it made me become even more comfortable with commenting on blogs as well it has shown me the educational value to them as well.

Allowing your hair to dry naturally not only saves you time and money but is much better for your hair, which is likely to become brittle if subjected to a daily blast of scalp-tingling hot air. SO save your energy-guzzling hair dryer for occasions when you need an extra-special coiffure or it’s simply to cold to go outside with even remotely wet hair.

Make your own notepad. Instead of using a brand new notebook for taking messages, keep a neat stack of scrap paper cut into quarters( stapled together into a pad if you prefer) next to the phone.

At my house we do something like this but but we use envelopes.

Technology Allows Anyone to be Creative

Last semester I was in Film 100 and one of the parts of the course was Avant Garde film. At first I wasn’t sure what to make of it but as I kept on watching both of the films I sort of liked it , in a weird way. My friend Jared was also in film 100 and he came up with this brilliant idea. He thought that him, myself and my other friend Sarah should make an Avant Garde film. So two weekends ago we filmed most of it. And as we were filming I thought that if we wanted to do this maybe forty of fifty years ago it would have cost allot of money for us to make this weird film. But what technology has allowed us to do is make a film with almost no budget. Because Jared got his camera for a gift and we are going to edit it on his computer. Also the experience of making the film was new to me because I had never done it before. So it allowed me to try something new .Technology has given people the freedom to experiment with other art forms and to present their work on a global scale that no other generation has been able to do.

This video talks about Avant Garde Films and has two clips from two different films giving you an idea of what these types of films look like.

I’m Getting Up To Speed

I have been living in the stone age when it has to deal with computers. But I feel that because of this class I have been forced to spread my wings and get up to speed. I did this by getting Internet Explorer 7!! AHHHH!! I love it! Ohh the tabs are so nice. I can flick back and forth so quickly from website to website. Many of you may think that this isn’t a really big deal but for me it is. This is because before I would always have to open a new Internet thing. I was just a hassle! As well the screen is much more pretty looking with the 7 then the 6 was. BOO 6!!

I was on Google one day and I thought that I would search digital storytelling. So I did and found this website which was the site for The Center For Digital Storytelling. The center is a non profit organization that holds workshops in the USA and in Canada( most are in the USA). Workshops is just one of the main things that they do . Their workshops consist of training people to become more comfortable with the idea of digital storytelling. They hold a three day workshop specifically for educators . It consists of the teachers making their won little story , so they know how to do it. And the other half they work on understanding how to do a storytelling project with a class, and work on fine tuning there newly learnt technology skills. This is only a small bit of what they do the website is http://www.storycenter.org/workshops.html and I suggest that you check it out. On the site they even have stories that you can watch which have been made at workshops. It’s pretty neat!

Addicted To Facebook!My Friends Were!

As many of us know Facebook has become incredibly popular during the last year or so. So many people have been forgetting about mayspace and turning to Facebook. I always hear my friends saying ”I”m going to go and Facebook”. Or any time when people take pictures you are bound to hear some one say “Tag me in that photo , but not in this one I look bad!”Facebook is great for connecting with friends in your city our half way around the world. But it seems lately that facebook is starting becoming to much of a good thing.

All of my friends except for one has Facebook but is seems that more and more of my friends are deleting their accounts. They say it’s because they get addicted to it and go on it sometimes four of five times a day. Looking for more of their friends to add, looking at pictures, adding pictures , tagging people, writing on walls and messaging . And by the time they are done on Facebook they have wasted a couple of hours essentially doing nothing. Another thing that I have noticed with Facebook is that people will message me about plans for the night or the next day and will assume that I have read it. And will get mad if I haven’t called them cause I didn’t read there message.JUST CALL ME YOU KNOW MY NUMBER!!Don’t get me wrong I like Facebook but I think when dealing with social networks like MySpace and Facebook we have to some what pace ourselves and not be come so addicted to then.

YouTube Trouble.

So I finaly uploaded Photostory 3 and I made my commercial . And I thought that it was really good.I tried to upload to youtube but it won’t let me.uhh! It saysthat it has uploaded up then it says that it isporcessing and that the file is wrong. So if anyone went through this and firgured it out I would really appreciate that help.

Computer Age.Our growing dependence upon the computeris fast becoming an enviromental scourge.More than 31 million PCs are thrown away worldwide each year.The plastc alone in each system requires 7 quarts of crude oil to make, and when computers are discarded many of their components including lead, nickel, and cadmium, can become enviromental hazards. Minimize this wastage by choosing a model that can be easily upgraded. When it’s really no longer useful to you , donate your computer to an organization that recycles IT equipment for resale or resue by schools or charities.
